What to Expect

Guides Along The Pathway To Change

The first step of treatment is an initial assessment, which is aimed at determining the underlying causes and severity of the problem, contributing factors, history of use, barriers to recovery, and establishing goals and ultimately a course of action.  The course and type of treatment is tailored to the unique needs of our clients, as determined from the initial assessment and modified as needed on an ongoing basis.

We utilize a flexible, innovative mix of treatment strategies that may include motivational therapy, education, family and peer support, group therapy, social and relationship skills training, cognitive-behavioral therapy, relapse prevention, psychotherapy, and pharmacotherapy, with our primary goal being to help our clients find the means they need to overcome their substance use disorder and maintain long term recovery.

We also stress the importance of nutrition and exercise to recovery.  Our treatment approach is based on the best available research and evidence, but we aren’t afraid to try out new approaches either or suggest alternative or experimental therapies that could support the recovery process.

Treatment is provided by a multi-disciplinary team of clinicians including a primary therapist, a group therapist and a psychiatrist if there is a co-occurring mental or emotional disorder. The primary therapist is the main guide through treatment, and they work with their clients on an individual basis beginning with the initial assessment.  Our intake staff makes every effort to match clients with a primary therapist best suited to their needs.

The length of treatment really depends on the client and the severity of the problem, but it is typical to move from an intensive phase (2-3 sessions per week, 8-12 weeks) to an early recovery phase (1-2 sessions per week, 8-12 weeks) to a period of maintenance and aftercare (1-2 times per month). We call these modules of care, and they are only guidelines. Nothing is etched in stone. Things happen that require modifications to the level, frequency and duration of care.  The most important thing to remember is that recovery is not a smooth process; it takes courage, honesty, commitment and hard work to be successful.

We do everything we can to help our clients prepare for life after treatment, and the challenges of long-term recovery. This requires addressing not only the fundamental causes of the problem, but also the addictive patterns and behaviors that are developed and honed over time. We help our clients explore the behavioral and learned aspects of their problem, and help them develop strategies to avoid their old rituals, routines and triggers.  We also provide aftercare treatment, where clients can share their struggles with long-term recovery, and get continuing support and feedback.
